Poverty

Currently, 32.7% of India’s population live below the international poverty line, making up ⅓ of the world’s poorest people (Indian Women Welfare Foundation, 2009). While poverty poses as a problem for the whole of India, it is especially pertinent in rural India, where almost 3 out of 4 Indians are considered poor. The incidence of poverty among the landless wage-earners who provide largely unskilled labor in markets is the highest among all social groups, proving that education and employment opportunities are the key factors that need to be addressed in order for poverty in India to be significantly reduced (The World Bank, 2011).
